GameCube

Note: This review is based on my playing of Star Wars: Rogue Leader

Well, it's here. The system everyone's been waiting for. Now, here we go:

Story: Some person at Nintendo decided they should make a game system that will kick Sony and Microsoft's butt. They did.

The Pokéfactor: Let's see, Pikachu is in Super Smash Bros. Melee

Look and Feel: A compact unit, the Gamecube boasts a carrying handle-no more worrying about dropping the system in transport.

3.8 (out of 4)

Graphics: ATI graphics circuitry produces amazing images, and you'll need Component Video to fully enjoy them (my S-video setup looked more than passable, though). You can also connect using the included composite video or separately sold (gasp) RF adapter (shudder).

3.7

Music & Sound:Wow, this is really cool stuff. GameCube only has Stereo outputs, but with a Dolby Pro-Logic II receiver, games like Rogue leader can deliver 5.1 sound. Actually, Pro-Logic I or even SRPSS (see my DVD review) produce phenomenal acoustic results. In fact, if I didn't know better, I'd say SRPSS was the basis for Pro-Logic II.

3.8

Play Control: The controller, unlike what I've found on the Playstation, is plenty large despite its compact size. The L & R buttons are redesigned and much more comfortable.

3.9

Other Factors: Load factors are virtually eliminated, thanks to clever tricks, the smaller disc size, and well-engineered games. Also, rather than using FMV as a blunt instrument (cough, cough, Square, cough), GameCube developers are encouraged to use it where appropriate and unobtrousive.

3.7 Raw average (20%, 20%, 20%, 20%,20%): 3.8

Tilt average (10%, 30%, 10%, 20%,30%): 3.8

My score: 3.9

The Final Say: Well, I must say that I am thoroughly impressed, even though I am more of a handheld gamer. However, I kinda expected my first PowerPC to say Macintosh on it.
