Hello, and welcome to Pokétalk for Thursday, August 5th, 1999. You know, I once heard of a person who did an entire Internet radio show on his iMac. Well whoop de doo! I'm doing an entire Internet radio show on a computer that's five years older than that! Now, the first thing I'd like to talk about is how yesterday the amazing technical feat was accomplished that a bunch of people (wouldn't be a bunch of Chihuahuas, now would it?) managed to get Game Boy Color to display over 2000 colors on the screen at once. Unfortunately, this process is highly processor intensive as you might imagine, and won't be used for many in-game elements. On another note, it is so hardware specific it won't run on emulators, so Nintendo will try to get it in its games as soon as possible. Also, tomorrow, the movie, the Iron Giant, comes out in theaters. Of course, the real reason everyone wants to see this movie is so they can see the trailer for the upcoming Pokémon movie. Let's face it, would we watch it for any other reason? Now actually, Warner Bros. has the trailer on its site. Unfortunately, because my computer is so old, I was unable to listen to the audio, and had to run through the video using the forward button (that's the button on the far right that lets you step through everything). However from what I gathered, it's not really that great or interesting, but what do we care, we'll buy anything! Another item of interest is the ongoing Pokémon mall tour. Now, I haven't been to any of these, basically because I was at the Mall of America on the wrong weekend, and didn't really want to go to Chicago. Okay, so wasn't really my choice anyway. I hear about the in Detroit, some people came up all the way from Clearwater, Florida just so his kid could compete. Now anyway, as much as I love Pokémon, I would not travel that far, especially since I've ridden in a car to Florida. Okay, it's not something you want to do if you live in Wisconsin (next time, I'm flying). In any event however, people are often surprised by the sheer number of people who are coming there. Now, let's face it, if Nintendo didn't think they could get a whole throng of people there, why would they even do it? And speaking of the Pokémon phenomenon, I am profoundly glad that none of the shirts fit me, otherwise I'd probably want to buy one, even though I'd never actually wear it. And now, a word from our sponsor! Ad: Temporal Express Announcer: How many times have you run into this situation? Steve: Oh no! These bills were all supposed to be in yesterday? Now what do I do? Announcer: Don't worry! Now there's Temporal Express! The world's only over last night delivery service! Steve: Time travel? That's gotta be expensive! Announcer: It's not! With Temporal Express, you can ship anything anywhere by yesterday for only $4.95! Steve: Amazing! Thanks Temporal Express! Announcer: Excessive or improper use of Temporal Express may result in paradoxes or the overthrow of major governments. Not responsible for lost, misdirected, or mail blown out into space. Temporal Express! When it absolutely positively had to be there yesterday! Now, if I ever get real commercials, I'll let you know. Now, with time we have left, I'd like to briefly discuss Nintendo's next generation system, codenamed Dolphin (someone must be watching too much Flipper over there). Anyway, from what we know, it will us a 400 MHz PowerPC processor (yahoo!) and will graphics chip designed by ArtX. Now, rumors are abound as to how man polygons it will push, but since I don't have any real data, I won't comment on that. Now it would seem that this time around, Nintendo isn't playing games. They're using the DVD format (although it won't actually be able to play DVDs), and they also seem to want to compete with Sony's console on every level, and probably try and beat it. Now, there's been some talk that Sony is going to price their system at $249, and there's word that Nintendo will price their system at $99. However, I don't think they'll go for that price point. Way I figure, they'll probably go for roughly half of whatever Sony does, which in this case would probably be around $129, $119. Now, obviously, with such a disparity in price point, one would have to wonder how Sony could ever compete, and perhaps it can't, but if there's one thing I've learned, it's that you can't predict people, and the people you can least predict are those in the video game industry. Thank you, and that's all for this week's edition of Pokétalk. I know it went by fast, but there's only so much space left on my hard drive, and I've got to conserve every megabyte. Well, I'll see you around next week, when we'll talk about more stuff. You know? Thank you, and this is Steven Reich saying good whatever time of day it is you're listening to this!
